Falling in Love: 2012 Fall Fashion Trends

{By Brittany Sadler}

Ah fall! That time of the year when the young woman’s heart turns toward fashion!

Changing seasons are such an exciting time, style-wise.  New colors, textures, silhouettes! Time to pull out the sweaters and boots, curl up with a cup of hot tea, and peruse the styles the fashion world is falling for.

Boldly Baroque

The Look:

Gorgeous, gold encrusted, and a little over the top, the baroque trend is not for the faint of heart.  We’re going for the luscious, glowing, elaborate look, so pair carefully with simple makeup and no jewelry.

How To:

However, unless you have a lot of black tie events to go to this year, you can just add a touch of baroque to your everyday ensembles. Add a chunky bejeweled bracelet to a jeans-and-tee. Instead of an ordinary tank top, slip a gold shirt with a little shine under a navy blazer. Baroque-style accessories are fun too- an elaborate purse, gorgeously decorated shoes, or fancy barrettes add a touch of glamour.

Military Minded

The Look:

Yes, we love the men in uniform, but we also love to steal their styles. This year’s take on the long-lasting military trend focuses on a modern reinterpretation of military styles.

How To:

Keep an eye out for sleek military style pieces. We’re going for a less dressed up, more authentic military look. A military style jacket is  a year long staple – you won’t be sorry you bought it. Try it over pretty dresses in the fall, jeans and boots in the winter, and as the perfect transition piece.  Military style boots, belts, and even dresses are a great way to toughen up your fall wardrobe.

Global Glamour

The Look:

Think: globe-trotting aristocrat. Unique pieces reminiscent of old world beauty, quirky tribal styles, fur trimmed – inspiration from all over the world. Lots of colors, patterns, beautiful textures create a look that is luxurious and daring.

How To:

Get a little bit outside of your comfort zone and channel your inner movie star.  A jacket with a fur collar. Dresses and pants in prints that make you think European aristocracy. Deep colors: burgundy, mahogany, deep blue, saffron.

British Beauty

The Look:

Oh so British, in bold plaids and tartans, trim tweeds, and floppy hats. Putting an American twist on English essentials gives these looks a fresh, new feel while remaining comfortingly classic.

How To:

Try everything tweed! Jackets, skirts, even pants all look great in tweed. Tweed is versatile, classy, and just oozes autumn (that sounds more British than fall :) ). If you want to go the plaid route, go big and bold. Vivid colors and oversized prints give coats and outwear a new kick. Floppy hats top the whole thing off and make a great style statement (and also an excuse to not worry about your hair!).

Cozy Chic

The Look:

Relaxed chic, comfy meets polished. Opposites attract, pairing cozy with classy.

How To:

To keep this look cute and quirky, not frumpy and grandmotherly be careful what you pair your cozy pieces with. Try a chunky knit sweater with a pencil skirt. Or a relaxed, oversized cardigan with slim jeans and cute ballet flats. Top off a chic dress with a thick soft knitted scarf or even a shawl (yes, those were on the runway!).

Which 2012 fall trends are your favorite? Which one will you be most excited about incorporating into your closet?
