How To Dress Like Audrey Hepburn

{By Brittany Sadler}

I would venture to say you’d be hard pressed to find a girl that doesn’t love Audrey Hepburn at least a little bit. Her girly, yet sporty style as well her unabashed exuberance and undeniable elegance have made her a fashion icon for generations.

So here’s how to take a page from Audrey’s book …

1. Play up your eyes

Audrey was the master of making her eyes the focal point of her face. Use skillful (not overdone) eye makeup to draw attention and don’t be afraid of layering on the mascara. Maybe try a subtle cat eye and draw your eyeliner slightly up at the outside corner of your eye. Essential to this is the bold eyebrow (don’t over-pluck!), emphasize your eyebrows’ natural shape. Brush on some pale or neutral lip gloss and you’re ready to go –  it’s dramatic without being showy.

2. Pick a style that works for you and own it

Don’t be afraid to wear what you love. Audrey often chose to show off her petite and athletic figure with dresses that had a fitted bodice and a flared skirt. The look worked well on her body and became her signature dress style. When you find a style that flatters your figure, take note and keep an eye out for pieces with a similar shape.

3. Choose the perfect pair of sunglasses

Sunglasses are an absolute necessity in the summer. When picking out sunglasses though, it’s important to keep your face shape in mind. With Audrey’s square jawline, these slightly cat-eye glasses worked perfectly. If your face is round, try square, cat-eye, or well-shaped aviators. For a heart shaped face, stay away from aviators and go for classic wayfarers.  If your face is oval, pretty much anything can work – a pair of Jackie O style oversized glasses are always a winner.

4. Throw on a pair of her namesake pants

Now known as the Audrey pant, these slim cut, cropped pants are perfect for the summer. In cute candy stripes or classic neutrals, they look both polished and playful and are a great addition to your summer wardrobe. Pair with a loose white blouse, a casual v-neck tee, or a dressy sleeveless top.

5. It’s the girl that makes the outfit

Simplicity lets your natural beauty shine. One of the things that  has made Audrey such a lasting style icon was her ability to make simple outfits look extraordinary merely by putting them on. She never let her clothes wear her. Remember, the point of a great outfit is to make you look great – you want to draw people’s attention to who you are, not what you are wearing.

6. Happiness is always beautiful

A girl with a big smile, who is truly happy and unselfconscious will always have an undeniable attraction. People are drawn to joy. Real life beauty doesn’t look like a somber runway model or a seductive perfume ad – real life beauty looks like a real girl living with enthusiastic abandon. In Audrey’s own words:

“I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls.”
