5 Tips for Putting Together the Perfect Outfit

{By Ellery Sadler}

How do you put together that perfect outfit?

It can be really hard to find the right combination of pieces, especially when browsing pages upon pages of clothes online or looking through the endless racks at a store. Somehow everything looks good but nothing seems to go together. Or maybe it all matches perfectly and it suddenly looks like you have only one favorite color. (And everyone knows you need at least three favorite colors.)

 Here are 5 tips for putting together a fabulous outfit.

Modcloth dress

 ModCloth is one of my favorite places to shop for cute dresses and accessories, so here is an outfit I put together to illustrate what I’m talking about.

1. Choose Your Main Piece Wisely

When picking out dress or skirt, it’s important to think about what you can pair with it and where you’re going to wear it. This dress if fun and flirty, with a bold color palette and pattern. You could easily dress it up for a night on the town or wear it for a day of shopping with your girlfriends. It’s a great statement piece and you can do a lot with accessorizing it.

2. Balance with Neutrals

If you have a brightly colored dress like this one, it’s a good idea ground it with some neutrals. The brown belt gives a touch of earthiness to an otherwise girly outfit. Skinny belts over dresses look amazing.

3. Go for the Glasses

I know there’s been a nerdy glasses craze for a while now, but seriously, glasses are so cute. And the right pair looks good on everybody. The black glasses with this outfit give a cool and quirky edge. [Check out this style guide to see which shape is right for your face.]

4. Bold and Bright

Don’t be afraid of color. Even with a colorful dress like this one, you can still add bright accessories. These shoes highlight the blue accents in the dress perfectly and since they’re flats they’re comfortable enough to wear exploring the streets of Paris and cute enough to wear to dinner. And I love these triangle earrings! The geometric shape is a great contrast to the soft lines of the dress. Always be aware of the balance of color and shape in your outfits. Contrast is key.

5. The Purse

A purse can make an outfit. And what could be cuter than a keyboard clutch? This is a great purse in that it is neutral but still quirky and unusual. It adds some interest and detail to this outfit without detracting from the dress. A fabulous purse is the perfect way to complete your look.
